A passionate charity worker, Rathana Ung contributed to the building of over 400 small homes as well as several water wells in Cambodia. In her free time, Rathana Ung enjoys listening to her favorite musician, Rihanna.

An eight-time Grammy Award winner, Rihanna is one of the world’s biggest pop stars. The native of Barbados has the third-most top-10 hits of all time on the Billboard Hot 100, behind only Madonna and The Beatles.

Music isn’t her only focus, however. She has a cameo in the summer blockbuster film Valerian, in which she plays an enslaved shapeshifting woman named Bubble, who launches into a rapid-fire, CG-assisted dance sequence.

To date, Rihanna has 64 acting credits, although most consist of music video shorts. She did, however, lend her voice to the 2015 film Home, and played the role of Moon Goddess in the 2014 remake of Annie. She had her first major role in 2012’s Battleship, in which she played Petty Officer Cora “Weps” Raikes. The 29-year-old is also slated to co-star in Ocean’s Eight, an all-female remake of Ocean’s 12, scheduled for release in June of 2018.

A Hip-Opening Yoga Posture – Pigeon Pose

Pigeon Pose pic

Pigeon Pose

A committed humanitarian, Rathana Ung has followed a special call on her life to help those in need, especially in such as Cambodia. During one trip, she was able to help build more than 400 homes for people living in poverty there. When she isn’t working as a volunteer, Rathana Ung maintains an active yoga practice, which helps her stay centered and maintain a healthy balance in her mind, body, and spirit.

In addition to its meditative benefits, yoga can help to stretch areas of the body that normally don’t get attention, as well as bring relief to areas that can sometimes suffer from chronic pain, such as the hips. One posture to use in this manner is the pigeon pose, which serves to open up the hip flexors.

To get into pigeon pose, begin in the downward facing dog position and bring the right leg forward to the middle of where the hands rest on the mat. Then take the left leg and lengthen it as if going into cobra pose, with the top of the foot pressing against the floor. Lastly, take the right leg and place it perpendicular to the hips on the floor with the foot as near to the left hand as possible. This will open up the right hip. Invert the pose the other way to open up the left hip.

Individuals who are just beginning their yoga practices are advised to work with a certified yoga teacher to ensure they learn proper form.

Cambodia Faces Iodine Deficiency Crisis

Rathana Ung

Rathana Ung is a community-focused volunteer who has engaged with charity organizations in building dwellings and a floating school in Cambodia. Rathana Ung also assisted in the construction of a maternity hospital in a remote part of the country that did not have physicians or nurses readily available.

As reported in The New York Times, one pressing issue facing Cambodians involves ensuring sufficient iodine in their diet. With Cambodia lacking in natural iodine, the country set in place a mandatory program of potassium iodate spraying on locally produced salt. This 2003 initiative was seen as essential to preventing iodine deficiencies, which cause swollen thyroid glands and goiters as well as cretinism and dwarfism.

The nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Japan, in 2011 had an unintended effect of making the cost of iodine, much of which is sourced from coastal well brine associated with natural gas drilling, much higher. Raw iodine price spikes have led to non-iodized salt flooding the market and those existing at the margins of society failing to obtain sufficient quantities of iodine.

One silver lining is that iodine deficiency is a long term health issue. The thyroid is efficient as a storage vehicle and there is a 5-10 year window before which lack of iodine leads to brain damage and goiters.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Early Acting Career

Jennifer Lawrence

A former accounting student at California State University, Fullerton, Rathana Ung enjoys popular music and movies. One of Rathana Ung’s favorite movies is Joy, and her favorite actress is Jennifer Lawrence.

Born as the youngest of three children to a family in a Louisville, Kentucky, suburb in 1990, Jennifer Lawrence never had dreams to become an actor. Until the age of 14, she had focused on athletics and had had relatively little drama training. Although she had done some local modeling and community theater, she had planned to become a doctor. Her plans changed during a family vacation to New York City at the age of 14, when she was discovered by a talent scout.

The scout took her photo and her mother’s telephone number. The following day, she was invited to perform a screen test, and things took off quickly from there. She spent the summer in New York City, appearing in commercials for MTV and in the motion picture The Devil You Know.

Lawrence’s success motivated the family to move to Los Angeles, where she acted in various television series, including Monk and Cold Case. She eventually secured a part on The Bill Engvall Show on TBS.

Her early career also included roles in films such as The Burning Plain and The Poker House. Her big movie break came in 2010 with the film Winter’s Bone, which earned her her first Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

Muslims in Cambodia

Rathana Ung is passionate about helping people. She has spent much time in Cambodia, where she joined friends and family to build wells, water systems, and a floating school in a water village for the people in need there. While in Cambodia, Rathana Ung made a special effort to help the Muslim community to promote unity in the region.

Most Cambodians practice Buddhism, but Muslims make up a sizable minority numbering around 500,000. Around 80 percent of the Muslim minority belong to the ethnic Cham group. Cham Muslims value education and helping those less fortunate. During the 1970s, the Cham Muslims were targeted by the Khmer Rouge regime. Over 130 mosques were destroyed during the period.

The Khmer Rouge regime lasted from 1975 to 1979. The era left a mark on the Cham people of Cambodia, but the community has been rebuilding since that time. While the country is still in poverty, there is relative peace and freedom of religion. Modern challenges faced by the Cham include a higher percentage of orphaned children than Cambodia’s overall average, as well as a shortage of schools and mosques.

Adele’s Early Years

A former student of accounting at California State University, Fullerton, Rathana Unng is a music lover. Rathana Ung especially enjoys listening to Adele.

An only child in North London, Adele wasn’t born into a musical family, but she was privileged to have an “arty mom” who encouraged her to try different things. Unfortunately, her father left when she was only 4, and his alcoholism led to their eventual estrangement.

Adele became fascinated by music at a young age, and she grew fond of both Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until she was 15 that she stumbled on some albums of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. From these, she found real inspiration in music that had been recorded some 40 years before her birth.

Though brilliant, Adele was a not a book-learner, so her mother got her into the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology. While a student, she recorded three songs for a school project that she uploaded to her MySpace page. The right people at XL Recordings listened to them and signed her to her first recording contract in 2006, just after she had graduated. She went on to win multiple Grammys and is an Oscar-winning songwriter.

Tips for Starting a Yoga Practice

Yoga Practice pic

Yoga Practice

As a devotee of yoga, Rathana Ung takes care to engage in the practice on a daily basis. With video guidance, Rathana Ung lets yoga relax and ground her in her life.

The concept of starting a yoga practice can be intimidating for beginners, particularly if they have not yet found a class that is truly appropriate for them. Beginners can benefit immensely from finding a yoga workshop that teaches not only the basic poses but also how to perform them safely and effectively. In some studios, new practitioners can purchase a trial pass that makes the process more affordable.

Once a new practitioner has found a yoga studio and learned the basic techniques, he or she can bring it into a daily routine. This typically starts with the selection of a convenient time, when the practitioner can consistently do the poses and make a commitment to do so regularly. For many, this is early morning, as the mind is less burdened and the practitioner often has not yet eaten.

Experts also suggest that the practitioner find a dedicated space in the home that feels positive, relaxing, and free from distractions. This does not need to be a separate room, but it should be quiet and private for the extent of the session.

The new practitioner must also commit to self-compassion and gentleness as he or she establishes a practice. Many beginners force themselves to try overly difficult poses, and they feel discouraged when progress is slow, which only serves to undo the relaxation inherent in yoga itself. By respecting the body’s limits and appreciating what it can do, the practitioner can establish yoga as a friendly and welcome part of the day.

Ed Sheeran’s Record-Setting Album X

A passionate charity worker in her home country of Cambodia, Rathana Ung has taken part in numerous goodwill initiatives such as building homes, wells, and developing water systems in small villages. In her spare time, Rathana Ung enjoys listening to the music of Ed Sheeran.

A Grammy Award-winning pop artist, Sheeran’s second album, X (pronounced multiply) debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at No. 1 in 2014 and has since sold over 2.8 million copies, making it the third best-selling album in the past decade. In its first week, the album sold 210,000 physical and digital units worldwide, which marked the most album sales for a British male solo artist since Rod Stewart’s “Stardust … The Great American Songbook Vol. III” sold 240,000 units in its debut week in 2004.

Although his total album sales are well short of the 20 million Adele’s 21 has generated, he did overtake the “Hello” artist in November of 2015 when X remained in the top-10 on the UK charts for a 73rd consecutive week, beating Adele’s 71-week record. Sheeran’s third album, ÷ (divide) was released on March 3, 2017.

Yoga as a Stress and Anxiety Reducer

Yoga pic

With a passion for charity work, Rathana Ung was involved in building over 400 homes in Cambodia with her friends and family. A number of the homes’ recipients were sleeping on dirt floors, under trees, or in shacks before they were given these permanent domiciles. During her spare time, Rathana Ung enjoys practicing yoga to relax.

Yoga provides several benefits to brain function and mental health. One of the most well-known ways yoga can support a person’s well-being is by reducing stress and anxiety. With the less rapid breathing, lower heart rate, and lower blood pressure that active yogis typically experience, yoga acts as a de-stressor that can substantially reduce overall levels of anxiety.

Although any type of exercise can release feel good neurotransmitters, yoga is one of the most research-proven ways to increase GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) levels. GABA is one of the main inhibitory neurotransmitters. Basically, GABA slows brain activity and allows a person to relax. Reduced levels can cause a person to experience stress or become anxious. By engaging in yoga for just one hour, GABA levels can increase by as much as 27 percent.

The Path to Adele’s First Recording Contract

Rathana Ung enjoys meeting and helping elderly individuals and other people who are less fortunate than herself. She is active with charity work, and helped develop a water system in a village in Cambodia so women and children no longer had to walk miles just to get fresh drinking water. When she is away from her charity work, Rathana Ung enjoys listening to Adele.

Grammy Award-winning singer Adele is best known for her songs Rolling in the Deep, Hello, and Someone Like You. As a young teen, her mother always encouraged her never to focus too much on a single pursuit, but rather to explore different opportunities. Adele’s passion for music came about early in her life.

Adele was enrolled in the alternative BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, as a traditional classroom setting didn’t suit her learning style. While she attended the school, she cut a three-track demo as one of her class projects, which led to it being posted on her MySpace social media account. Not long after this the three-track demo was heard by executives at XL Recordings. The recording company personally contacted Adele, and within just four short months she not only graduated from school but had also signed a record deal.
