A former student of accounting at California State University, Fullerton, Rathana Unng is a music lover. Rathana Ung especially enjoys listening to Adele.

An only child in North London, Adele wasn’t born into a musical family, but she was privileged to have an “arty mom” who encouraged her to try different things. Unfortunately, her father left when she was only 4, and his alcoholism led to their eventual estrangement.

Adele became fascinated by music at a young age, and she grew fond of both Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until she was 15 that she stumbled on some albums of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. From these, she found real inspiration in music that had been recorded some 40 years before her birth.

Though brilliant, Adele was a not a book-learner, so her mother got her into the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology. While a student, she recorded three songs for a school project that she uploaded to her MySpace page. The right people at XL Recordings listened to them and signed her to her first recording contract in 2006, just after she had graduated. She went on to win multiple Grammys and is an Oscar-winning songwriter.
